Understanding What the Will of the Lord Is

Text: "Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is." Ephesians 5:17

Discovering God's will can sometimes be difficult. Those deluded souls who drown their children because "it is God's will" don't help matters. However, we must remember that God intends for His will to be known. It can be known.

God's will is first of all expressed in the Bible, God's Word. Familiarity with the biblical text helps keep sincere souls in the will of God and out of the foolishness our text warns against. When a wayward wife discovers that "the Lord has provided" an apartment in another city so that she can leave her husband, something alien has intruded.

Secondly, God's will can often be discovered by consulting with a variety of other brothers and sisters who themselves are familiar with God's Word. "In the multitude of counselors, there is safety," the Scriptures say.

Tomorrow's Daily Doctrine will pick up this theme. But one more word here: The text clearly sets the will of God in opposition to foolishness. Aberrant, eccentric behavior is hardly the will of God. Departure from the Scriptures, plainly understood, is definitely not the will of God.

That is why we are admonished not to be unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
